Fire/Water Damage

We are often called in to restore pieces of furniture or art that have been damaged either in a fire or flood situation. We work with individuals, insurance companies and remediation companies to restore items damaged during such tragedies. Our goal is to restore as much as possible for customers so that can have their precious personal belongings back in their original state. We obviously know that any time we can restore something, it is also much more cost effective for all parties than replacing an item. Plus, some items are sentimental, and we do our best to help the customers get their original pieces back!

Set of Four Bentwood Chairs
We were asked to restore this set of four chairs that were stained from water damage. Unfortunately, there was a plumbing leak on the second floor and water leaked for quite some time onto these chairs as well as a pair of antique chairs (below) and a wonderful built in hutch. As this is a second home for the clients, the leak was not discovered immediately and the water had time to really damage all these pieces.
These wonderful chairs were made by Jim Becker, a well know furniture maker in Vermont. The black staining is primarily on the chair seats but also dripped to other areas on the legs and cross pieces. We consulted with Jim Becker on our restoration strategy. We initially sanded the damaged areas of the chairs using various grades of sandpaper to bring the chairs down to the natural wood. We then applied color back to the chairs to color match the other chairs that did not require restoration. The chairs were then oiled and given a nice wax finish for a warm, seasoned luster.

Set of Two Antique Chairs
The same client above has this great set of antique chairs that were also water damaged. The water really damaged the finish on the bottom of the chairs. We carefully cleaned the chairs, repaired the finish and gave them a French polish. The woodgrain is really wonderful and they have a soft, warm glow now.

Built - In China Cabinet
The same customer with the two sets of chairs above also asked us to restore the water damage to this great piece. The water ran directly onto the right side of the cabinet, leaving water marks on the frame, drawers and knobs. Also, the right corner of the piece blackened and cracked. We had to repair the crack and damage to the corner and touch it in to color match the rest of the piece. We also had to remove all the water splash marks and damage to the finish on the drawers and rest of the piece. Once all that restoration was finished, we gave the piece a wax finish.

ANTIQUE SPANISH HUTCH
A couple in Greenport, NY had a burst pipe during a particularly bad cold snap, and water poured down the ceiling into their dining room. Several pieces were damaged, including this unique Spanish hutch. The top is very warped and there is water damage to the finish. We lovingly restored this piece to its original condition.

Antique English Console Table
This piece is one of several client pieces damaged in a recent fire in NYC. While it was not burned, this lovely antique console had smoke damage and damage to the finish from chemicals used by the firemen. Also, the piece was scratched and cracked when it was moved out of the way. The top of the piece is made of rare French walnut and the base is made of oak. We separated the top from the base to repair the large crack with butterfly inserts.

The client prioritized preservation of the original finish and antique integrity of the console. Therefore, we repaired the crack and touched in the repair, careful to match the area to seamlessly blend with the original finish.

Pair of Silver Game Cocks
This lovely pair of decorative game cocks was also damaged during a fire. We carefully straightened the feet, which were bent out of position. The feathers were also straightened and returned to their proper shape. We then carefully polished the pieces to their original shine.

Set of Nesting Tables
This cute set of nesting tables was also damaged in a fire. The finish was basically ruined due to smoke and chemicals. In addition, one leg broke off and the tables were scratched as they were moved by the firemen. We removed all the legs and re-glued them to ensure each table was sturdy once again. We then repaired all the scratches and damaged veneer. The tables were then finished with a light French polish.

Round Dining Table
This is a piece damaged by the fire extinguishing foam as the firemen put out a fire in a NYC apartment. Also, the table had to be moved out of the way quickly, so it was scratched and dented in several places. The table is an antique reproduction that had a lacquer finish that was extremely brittle. Upon stripping the piece, we found that we had to reverse and re-instate prior restorations. Once we were able to remove the old finish, we began our restoration process. We carefully repaired all the dents and scratches before French polishing the tabletop. We also repaired scratches to the table base and polished the brass feet to bring them back to their original bright shine.
